I am planning to move to DC in January and work or volunteer for a local organization doing organizing or advocacy for social justice. I have some experience in community development and housing and legal services. I graduated from college four years ago with a degree in public policy.
Can you recommend some prospects? Thank you.

REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS FOR GFE’s ANNUAL CONFERENCE
Answering the Call: Uniting for Impact, Fostering Solutions
October 3-5, 2011, Los Angeles, California
Grantmakers for Education invites its members to submit session proposals for our annual conference, the nation’s largest gathering of education funders. Submissions should clearly indicate the proposed session’s learning objectives, its relevance to education grantmakers, how the session’s design will engage conference attendees, and the ways the session connects to the conference theme and framing language included below. This year, we also invite proposals for a limited number of three-hour sessions focused on specific problems of practice. Because these sessions differ in format and approach from the more numerous 90-minute sessions, please read the RFP carefully to determine which length and format is best suited to the approach you want to propose.
You can download a full set of directions for crafting and submitting proposals online: http://www.edfunders.org/downloads/conf2011/2011_GFE_Conference_RFP.pdf
Proposals are due Tuesday, March 15, 5:00 pm PT.
Answering the Call: Uniting for Impact, Fostering Solutions
When it comes to fulfilling the potential of our nation’s learners, we have no time to waste. How can grantmakers act in the moment to address the needs of millions of students whose futures remain in peril, while maintaining the patience and persistence necessary to see long-term solutions through to fruition? How can we move past ideological debates and unite around our shared commitment to expanding opportunities and improving outcomes for all learners? How can we use our role as education grantmakers to drive better outcomes for all communities?
As education’s entrenched problems persist and new challenges arise, let us focus on the goals we hold in common, forging effective, collective approaches to achieve them. Keeping the success of diverse learners at the center of our efforts, we must build new alliances with unlikely partners. Moving past any belief in silver bullets or siloed approaches, we can rethink, reframe and redesign what education means in America.
Join Grantmakers for Education in Los Angeles for the nation’s largest gathering of education funders. Against the backdrop of one of our country’s most creative, diverse, and globally-minded cities, we will learn lessons from small towns, large urban centers and other nations, elevating the voices of those who are too seldom heard in education debates. Together, we will answer the call.
We look forward to seeing your proposal. Please contact DeL’Aurore Kyly if you have any questions or need any assistance in preparing your proposal.

Our top domestic campaign priorities include protecting the public from dangerous nuclear reactors, promoting environmentally responsible federal budget practices (including an end to taxpayer subsidies for polluters), and preventing the construction of an oil pipeline that would bring the world’s dirtiest oil from Canada to the United States.

We are looking for a communications intern to expand our organization’s communications capacity. You will be tasked with engaging in communications work that supports our policy advocates and helps them win campaigns in the short term, while helping to strengthen Friends of the Earth and the broader progressive and environmental movements in the long run. You will engage in activities including generating media coverage, sending email alerts to activists, writing persuasive blog posts and op-eds, participating in online social networks, and developing communications and campaign strategies.

    - Build and update media contact lists and pitch stories to reporters.
    - Track media coverage, e-alert performance, and ad performance.
    - Learn how to use and then use our online advocacy and email software, as well as our website content management system and our media contact database.
    - Produce content for Twitter, Facebook, and other social media sites.
    - Produce multimedia content, including videos and photos.
    - Attend, facilitate, and help with logistics for various events and meetings.
    - Conduct research.

    - be a superb writer who communicates in a precise, concise, accessible and persuasive manner.
    - work hard and stay on task.
    - pay attention to detail.
    - excel whether working individually or in teams.
    - take responsibility for assignments and meet deadlines.
    - possesses political savvy, and be knowledgeable about and interested in politics, policy, advocacy, and social movements.
    - consume various types of media and be familiar with current events.
    - care deeply about the future of our planet and the people on it.
