PHI is seeking a full time Program Director III (PD III) for the Center for Public Health and Climate Change. This position may be located in Oakland, CA or Washington, DC.

The Program Director will report to the President/CEO and will relate to the Director of Policy and Advocacy and the Vice President for Global Health. There are existing staff and funding reporting to this position.

The Program Director will be a dynamic and visionary leader that will lead the next phase in the development and expansion of PHI’s Center for Public Health and Climate Change.

Duties & Responsibilities:

The Program Director will work with PHI leadership to establish and guide the growth of the Center by setting its direction and overarching vision as a leading public health voice highlighting the connection between public health and climate change in California, nationally and globally. The Program Director will have responsibility for the Center’s programmatic, policy, research and fund development. The successful applicant will be a recognized national leader with at least five years of experience working at a senior level at the intersection of environment and health. She/he will have sufficient technical depth, media savvy, fund development capacity, and relationships across the scientific, advocacy, programmatic, media and donor communities to be able to position PHI as a leading global player in the public health and climate change arena.

The Program Director will be the technical lead and a spokesperson for the organization and its policy objectives in the area of public health and climate change, so must be an expert in media relations and communications. The Program Director will possess solid experience in organizational management, growth and development; fund development; leadership of staff; and working with researchers, practitioners and policymakers. The Program Director must have experience in designing and managing health and environment programs, as well as analyzing and advising on health and environment policies.

Qualifications:

  • A Masters degree is required. A Masters, PhD or JD in environmental health, environmental sciences, or a related field is highly preferred
  • A minimum 5 years of experience is required (10 years preferred) in the fields of public health and/or climate and environment. Working at the intersections of these issues is preferred
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills, including social media, and including a record as a media spokesperson
  • History of publications in the field
  • A minimum of 3 years supervising employees
  • Successful history of raising major funds, including through bid and proposal development and relationship-building with foundation and government donors
  • Some experience working on international health and environment programs, including at a leadership level
  • Some experience implementing a multi-sector program or project
  • Some experience working in or with developing countries preferred
  • Foreign language proficiency preferred
  • History of establishing effective public/private and corporate partnerships preferred

This is an exempt position and the salary is commensurate with experience.
