For 15 hours each week during the school year, and more during the summer, Higher Achievement Scholars are learning, studying, and enhancing their opportunities for the future at Achievement Centers throughout DC and in Alexandria. Scholars spend hundreds of hours each year–beyond the school day–developing their skills in literature, math, technology, and other subjects so they can attend top high schools and go on to college.
If these fifth- through eighth-graders can dedicate themselves to their education, shouldn’t we do the same? Serving as a mentor for a Higher Achievement Scholar requires a commitment of two hours per week. The organization provides an excellent social justice and standards-based curriculum. All you have to do is prepare for your lesson and work with your scholars to help them learn it. Higher Achievement is a strong, growing organization with an amazing track record of success for its scholars. Volunteers are also needed to help Scholars with homework, if a less intensive role is more your style.
