ORGANIZATION BACKGROUND___________________________________

The Girl Scout Council of the Nation’s Capital is headquartered in Washington, DC, and serves 25 counties in the Greater Washington Region, with offices in Frederick and Waldorf, MD; Leesburg, Lorton and Manassas, VA; and Martinsburg, WV.  As of September 30, 2009, GSCNC has a combined girl and adult membership of over 90,000.  The membership consists of 63,000 girls and 27,000 adult volunteers.

GSCNC serves girls through wide ranging activities in 4,900 troops with the help of dedicated volunteers- women and men who give their time, talent and energy to Girl Scouting.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES____________________________________

The successful Chief Executive Officer candidate will be an outstanding leader who is strategic, creative and innovative.  The CEO will possess outstanding organizational, motivational, and communication skills.  The CEO will ensure an organizational culture and infrastructure that promotes and sustains membership growth.  The CEO will work in partnership with the Board of Directors and other volunteer groups in the development and successful execution of fund development strategies.   The CEO will ensure that the operations, image, and leadership in the Council actualize the mission of Girl Scouting: the development of girls with qualities that will serve them all of their lives, like leadership, strong values, social conscience, and conviction about their own potential and self-worth.

The Chief Executive Officer will oversee a budget of $14 million and a staff of 112 full-time employees.

The Chief Executive Officer will promote Girl Scout visibility and strengthen the Girl Scout image in the community.  The CEO will partner with Girl Scouts of the USA to carry out the mission of the organization and to obtain advice or consulting services, information, and resources.

Specific duties and responsibilities include:

  • The Chief Executive Officer will provide strategic leadership by working with the council board and members of the senior management team to establish and implement long and short-term priorities, goals, and operating objectives in support of the overarching business strategy;
  • The CEO will ensure the financial health and integrity of the council by employing sound fiscal controls and by effectively integrating, managing, and leveraging the council’s resources and assets;
  • The CEO will serve as an advocate for Girl Scouts in the council by representing the council to the general public and to the corporate community; and by building awareness and support for the council’s contributions to the community;
  • The CEO will ensure that the council’s activities and functions enhance organizational diversity; ensure full inclusion and promote nondiscrimination in every aspect of Girl Scouting.

EXPERIENCE_____________________________________________________

The new Chief Executive Officer for GSCNC could come from a wide range of private companies and/or nonprofit organizations.  The position requires a personal passion and commitment to Girl Scouting as the way to “build girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.”

The ideal candidate will have:
