Internships: Smart Growth America

Smart Growth America has several types of internships currently open for Fall 2010 and Spring 2011. If you don’t see an internship that interests you, check back, as we usually offer internships during the semester schedule, and begin accepting applications several weeks before each semester:

Legislative Internship: Assist with federal smart growth campaigns, including on global warming, affordable housing, and transportation. Responsibilities include conducting research, developing fact sheets and other materials, and providing support to our legislative team.

Policy Internship: Assist with major research projects, database development, and policy analysis at the federal and state levels.  Responsibilities include working with the policy and research team on ongoing projects.

Technical Assistance Internship: SGA hosts workshops for Governors across the country and their top staff on leading state smart growth policies. Responsibilities include prepping for workshops, including conducting research on states, smart growth issues, and helping with materials for meetings.

Communications Internship: Smart Growth America generates media coverage of development and transportation issues around the country. Responsibilities include helping to draft media materials (such as letters to the editor and op-eds), tracking media coverage and news, and developing fact sheets and other materials to support SGA’s campaigns.

REQUIREMENTS: These positions all require a self-motivated and detail-oriented person with excellent communication, writing and organizational skills. The candidate should be highly computer literate with specific experience or a willingness to learn database management, new policy topics, and work in a hands-on environment. Candidates must have exemplary research and writing skills. Familiarity with, as well as strong interest in, smart growth, transportation, economic development, social equity, or redevelopment is a plus. Both undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to apply.

Compensation and Time Frame: Start and end dates and work hours are flexible based on the intern’s schedule. Summer interns are expected to work 40 hours a week for a 10-12 week period. Fall and spring interns are expected to work between 10 and 40 hours a week for a minimum of 10 weeks. Interns may receive academic credit if an agreement is made between SGA and the intern’s college or university. All interns are subject to the applicable SGA employee rules.

The internship stipend will be based on the following schedule: Full time (25 or more hours a week): $300 per semester, Part time (10-24 hours a week): $150 per semester
